The Day The Sky Roared is a short film written and directed by Jason Iskandar. This short film tells the story of a mother’s return trip after picking up her daughter at school right in May of 1998, when riots have raged in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia. However, for her daughter, it was a day when the sky roared.
This short film is abstracted by Jason’s experience as a child. For a year, Jason took the time to chat with friends who had similar experiences. Jason not only collected stories from various backgrounds, but also analyzed how they interpreted the event, before then he translated into a script he filmed.
The Day The Sky Roared is told with a tense atmospheric approach. No dialogue is spoken in this film. Jason focuses more on building a description not only of the material conditions of the time of the riot, but also exploring the psychological condition of the character of a child who is under the age of 10.
